Visit to Amar Sevashram on 14 September 2017

With a high aim of serving the senior citizens living in Old Age Homes in every possible way, the students of Grade 9 paid a visit to Shri Amar Sevashram, Indore, as a part of their service as action. It was their first visit to this place. They were accompanied by the Service Coordinator Mr. Amit Puranik, Ms. Meenal Kalambkar and Mr. Nand Dani. The students carried many delicious fruits in colourfully wrapped baskets to be offered to the inmates of the ashram.

A very affectionate welcome was extended to the group at the reception by the manager of the Ashram, Mr. Manglani.  The students interacted with him at length about all possible services that could be extended to the ashram inmates. Assistance can be provided in physiotherapy treatments, and cultural activities for entertainment.

This was followed by a welcoming programme organised in the auditorium of the Home where Mr. Manglani gave a short presentation on how Amar Sevashram came into being and how it is functioning successfully with support from the local community. The basic question ‘Is it a good idea to have Old Age Homes?’ touched the students. Mr. Manglani explained owing to the hectic lifestyle of the present times there is a need for old age homes.

Our students offered the fruit baskets that they had taken along to them. Pamphlets of the ashram were distributed to the students.  The inmates felt quite moved by this affectionate interaction. Then, a plan was made to offer certain services during further visits. Towards the end, the students offered an impromptu, short cultural programme for the senior citizens which was appreciated zealously.

Before taking leave, delicious snacks were offered by the ashram. The relationship forged with the ashram residents by the Grade 9 students was commendable. While bidding farewell to the students, the senior citizens of the ashram offered them an apple each. This reinforced the fact that though they had become destitute due to their family forsaking them, they still had large hearts that encompassed whoever visited them as per our Indian tradition ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’.
