Leprosy Awareness Induction on 20 November 2017

Last Monday, 20 November 2017, the MYP students in our school were taken through a one hour induction on spreading awareness of leprosy – a horrible disease which is common amongst people in India. The induction was given by the only NGO for leprosy in India: Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation.

The induction presentation gave us answers to the most misunderstood questions about leprosy, such as what is leprosy, what are the symptoms, how can we cure the disease, is the disease hereditary, and are we protected from the disease. The induction also debunked a lot of myths and lies about the disease.

We watched an informative video made by a volunteer at Sasakawa Foundation where a lady who suffers from leprosy helps people around India. She informed us about a leprosy village and told us about people who were neglected because of their leprosy conditions. The induction presentation made us feel bad for the people living with leprosy in society or in the special village.

We hope more and more people become aware of leprosy and take action to prevent this disease from afflicting others. Although 99% of the Indian population is safe from this disease, and medication for the disease is also free in all hospitals, we hope those who suffer from leprosy can be cured easily.
