Inculcation of International Mindedness Through Chemistry
One of the main
goals of IB programmes is to help students see their role in a wider global
context and community. In the current scenario, this objective becomes much
more relevant as globalization has caused the world to shrink and instilling
intercultural understanding is a need of the hour. In order to achieve this
objective, various opportunities are given to learners at Choithram International.
One such
opportunity was provided to the learners of MYP 4 through chemistry: learning about
atoms and molecules under the topic radioactive isotopes. The students were given
an introduction to radioactive isotopes and nuclear fission and fusion reactions.
They were then encouraged to read newspaper articles carrying information on
the first atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan during World
War II.
The students were
asked to research the impact of the atom bomb attack on Japan and asked
thought-provoking questions on the current India-China standoff over Bhutan-Doklam
region, questioning whether it poses a similar threat?
The students
participated enthusiastically and shared their views on radioactive isotopes,
war and its impact, and the current Doklam controversy. They also reached a
conclusion that often fake messages on social media aggravate misunderstandings
and confusion between countries and people.
