Reflections on SAIBSA MYP Job Alike Session Mumbai on 7 October 2017

SAIBSA – An Introspection!
– Rajee Venugopal

Attending SAIBSA Job Alike session was a good learning experience.

The plenary session was very interesting wherein we received a lot of inputs to improve our understanding of conceptual learning, using Global contexts and making classroom learning interesting, and at the same time informative by applying the inquiry cycle.

Our subject specific meet started on a very dull note with a Skype session on Simulations. I found that most of the science teachers already use simulations in their classroom teaching.

Then a session on answering questions related to grey areas in unit planners was conducted, which I think could have been more specific for the benefit of new teachers. Anyway, most of the queries were attended to in a short time.

A lot was discussed on IDU planning and I was glad to find that our understanding about planning and executing an IDU is quite sound. It was overwhelming to know that we are moving in the right direction as far as unit planner, IDU planning, and classroom teaching are concerned.

Connecting IDU with E-Assessments was specified and this was a good session through which my knowledge about such assessments was enhanced.

I’m looking forward to attending more such sessions. In fact, I would try my hand on planning to conduct a session in the near future on ‘Unit Planners’.

It was a great learning experience. The first plenary session was interesting wherein we enhanced our understanding of concept based learning. We also discussed the difference between facts and concepts based on topics.

Our subject specific meet was an interactive session wherein we discussed the unit plans and E-assessments (E-portfolios) and shared our resources.

The day concluded with an enlightening session on Global context and inquiry based teaching and its alignment with the curriculum.

It was truly a learning experience; looking forward for more sessions like this.

MYP SAIBSA – Opportunities to Share and Learn from Other Teachers
– Wama Ojha

SAIBSA is the acronym for the South Asia International Baccalaureate Schools Association. SAIBSA aims at promoting greater understanding of IB at all levels. The aim of this association is to help nurture the growth of the IB movement in South Asia and help many more teachers and students benefit from the unique IB programmes.

MYP SAIBSA 2017 took place on 7 October 2017 at RKB International School, Mumbai. It was a great event wherein various IB schools participated. The day started with introductory session by Ms Gillian Ashworth who spoke about the importance of concepts and conceptual understanding.

This was followed by various departmental sessions wherein we were briefed by our departmental facilitator regarding inquiry building; formative and summative assessment; criterion descriptor and subject objectives; statement of inquiry; e-assessment and IDU planning.

MYP SAIBSA provided us with opportunities to share our strategies and planning with other teachers from various schools and learn from them as well. The day ended with a last session by Ms Gillian Ashworth again on global context and its exploration and connection with summative tasks.

It was a great learning experience which enriches our knowledge and understanding to a higher level.

MYP SAIBSA Enhanced Our Knowledge and Understanding

“What we learn with pleasure we never forget.”  – Alfred Mercier

I got an opportunity to be a part of an esteemed MYP SAIBSA Job Alike session hosted by RBK International, Mumbai. Indeed, it was an interactive and sharing platform where we all shared our teaching practices and strategies. However, it was like….  ‘We never stop learning because life never stops teaching’.

The plenary sessions by Ms Gillian Ashworth were very lively. Her introductory session was based on Inquiry and concept based learning and, at the end, she focused on effective use of Global Context and developing International Mindedness.

In between these two plenary sessions were subject specific breakout sessions on curriculum planning and e-portfolios wherein art specific strategies and practices were discussed. Though we have sound understanding of our subject and IB philosophy, through this sharing platform, we enhanced and polished our knowledge and understanding.

I realized that, as we are efficiently trained by HOD’s, coordinators and pedagogical teams, we were able to participate actively, with enthusiasm and confidence.
