Guest Lecture: NGO Muskan Group Organ Donation for MYP 3 on 6 January 2018

Service is an integral part of MYP. During a discussion in class about heart transplants, our MYP 3 students participated in a debate on whether ‘organ donation after death should be made compulsory’. Subsequently, the students took the initiative to take up the issue of ‘organ donation’ as their service programme.

To start with, members of an NGO called MUSKAN GROUP interacted with the students and made them aware of the importance of organ donation. They understood that the need for organs to save life is high, while people willing to donate organs are few owing to a lack of awareness.

Mr Sandeepan from Muskan Group briefed the students about live organ donation and cadaver donation and encouraged them to spread awareness about the importance and requirement of organ donation. The students also had first-hand information about kidney transplants through a recipient who shared phases of her life before and after receiving a kidney.

The students are now planning to take this initiative (curriculum driven service) further by communicating to their community about what they learnt about organ donation. Their target now is to convince people to register themselves for donation. The students will also work with Muskan Group as volunteers whenever a requirement for organ donation arises.
