Student Reflection on Guest Lecture - Organ Donation

As a part of our service, we decided to take an initiative which could actually benefit the society. We planned to persuade people to donate organs to people who are in a genuine need of those organs.

To plan an activity, we ourselves had to know about its pros and cons. So, we had a debate on the advantages of donating organs and the limitations for the same. The debate was very interesting for me because before the debate I used to think that donating organs can only be an advantage as you are helping someone. But, as the debate went ahead, I was surprised to know that there are various barriers which stop people to donate organs, be it the religious factors or the social factors.

A few days later, on  6th January 2018, we had a guest lecture on organ donation by a member of the "Muskaan" group. This gave me a very good understanding of the fundamentals or the principles of organ donation. We were told about the different types of donors, those who donate before death i.e Live donor and those who donate after death i.e Cadaver donor. We were also told about one real story of a female recipient and the she herself told the story. Both her kidneys stopped working and she was in the hospital for around 6 years undergoing Dialysis. After 6 years, when her health was critical, she got a call that someone is ready to donate a kidney to her. That call truly changed her life. Then I realized that each one of us can save many lives and this will bring us blessings and it is not only a person you save but his or her family as well from breaking down emotionally by the death of their dear ones. I was ready to take an initiative that could save lives. I was ready to serve people.
