“Service as Action-Student reflection"

We, the Business Studies and Economic students of MYP 4, decided to do a business activity at school. It all started with the inception of the Marketing chapter in Business Studies and Equity, Costs and Revenues Chapter in economics. On the 16th of February, we started with a series of discussions and created our own SOI (Statement of Inquiry), followed by creating our SMART( Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Bound) goals which we learned in school.

We created an action plan. The next day, we took permission from the school admin and the ‘Jwala Mahila Samiti' Founder, Dr Divya Gupta, so that we could understand the purpose of the organization and support their cause. We discovered that Jwala Mahila Samiti is non-political self-funding, a social organization of women.

In groups ,we then started working on our own presentations and also brainstorming on how we could advertise their products. On 21 February 2018, we visited ‘Jwala' and saw the myriad of products that they manufactured. We also tried understanding the issues that they faced. It was truly an overwhelming experience to see the extent to which the women coming from deprived sections of the society had empowered themselves through the ‘Jwala’ initiative, though they were uneducated. This activity was directly linked to our curriculum as in the first unit we had a task that was based on ‘women entrepreneurship and how it was looked at in the society’. We decided we would use the marketing strategy with all the 4 Ps - Price, Promotion, Product, Place. This experience has helped us clear a lot of concepts that are related to academics. This activity supported us to develop our ‘investigation skills’ which is directly linked to our "Criterion B" and also helped us develop our ‘management skills’ through following and keeping up with a detailed action plan and maintaining a timeline.

In conclusion, the experience was very informative for the class as a whole as it helped us to develop many IB learner profiles like Thinker, Communicator, Knowledgeable, Open minded and Risk taker. All these activities were carried out under the guidance of our Economics teacher - Ms. Surbhi Vaish, Arts teacher - Ms. Varsha Kukreja and our Business Studies teacher - Prabhjot Arneja.
