Beowulf and Rama: Two analogous heroes
I wonder how two heroes coexist,
How do they terminate mighty demons and save the rest?
How Beowulf’s extravagant flair and Rama’s calm compare?
Their ability to do justice, make peace have come very rare.
There are differences though, in the way these writers made these characters grow,
From a young age, Rama has the responsibilities of a huge kingdom on his shoulders,
While Beowulf was practising war and lifting off boulders.
His envious stepmother managed to send Rama away,
As Beowulf fought with bravery and kept monsters at bay.
This is when Rama realizes that his power knows no bounds, he is invincible
A form of Vishnu that is unconquerable
Yet, he fears if he is doing the right thing, arrogance shows no manifestation,
He is a form of god, still for Ravana that is not enough indication.
He abducts Sita, Rama’s beloved wife, Rama couldn’t control his rage,
How could he trap his wife and tie her in a cage?
Ravan just like Grendel, envy fills their thoughts,
Couldn’t see someone greater than, their soulless bodies would rot.
Aware of the danger, Beowulf fought Grendel nonetheless,
Like Rama, he recognised his worth, killed the monster who was now in distress.
Rama was challenged by giants but his righteousness destroyed them no matter how hard they tried,
His dedication was like a potent river that never dried.
He ended Ravana and his hubris,
Freed Sita and returned to the land that was always his.
Beowulf and Rama both ruled for several years; fair and wise
They destroyed demons and dragons with a spark in their eyes.
They maintained peace and security in their kingdom at the cost of their own lives.
They were two brave warriors in history poles apart,
With unparalleled courage and a golden heart.
These epics are celebrated all around,
Their diversities are what make them so profound.
Ramayana set in India a land of culture and traditions,
While Beowulf set in Dane is so empowering, it takes away all inhibitions.
Sage Valmiki composer of the Ramayana adds life to the story with his metaphors, personification and skill,
Like the Ramayana, Beowulf has metaphors, adjectives, assonance, kennings and alliteration to add all the thrill.
The use of these devices make the epic more soulful,
It leaves the readers completely mesmerised,
It takes them by surprise,
Although incompatible the epics are alike!
