 Succeeding with Sciences


On 24t August 2021, the students of MYP 5 had the privilege to interact with the eminent scientist Dr. Anindya Dutta, Head of Chemistry Department, IIT Bombay. Science and its advancements especially in India was the core of the guest lecture as he threw light upon the various fields of research and progress that the Indian scientists have achieved.

In the purview of the benefits of scientific developments, he apprised the students of the major scientific achievements in independent India. His saying ‘Curiosity sustains the cat’ in scientific fields, left food for thought for all students. The students got the opportunity to satisfy their curiosity by asking pertinent questions to Dr. Dutta.
He aptly termed 'Scientists as Avengers for the current challenges' which throws light on the contribution of scientists towards modern developments. The messages relayed 'not to follow anyone blindfolded as they might be following others blindfolded '; 'do not be afraid of the unknown' and 'keep asking questions' along with the light thrown upon 'expressionism and impressionism' further guided students into practical implementation of their learning. Through an enumeration of national and global research and advancements, the guest speaker led the students to develop an international minded approach to sciences.
The session was an added insight into interdisciplinary learning whereby the benefits of amalgamation of literature with sciences were delved into.The enriching session has generated a penetrating interest among the students and has evolved their perspective towards the benefits of sciences.

Interdisciplinary Learning and International Mindedness through Case Studies in Chemistry

by Jalpa Shreyas Shah A case study is a good example of problem-based learning which involves in-depth study of the problem through research and data collection. In a case study, students not only learn to identify the problem but also propose solutions and explain the social, economic, geographical implications of the study being undertaken. This can be a very good teaching pedagogy for development of criterion D in sciences which reflects on the impact of sciences with regard to a proposed problem. Our students of Grade 9 Chemistry were provided with a case study on the problem ‘Life and condition of people involved in emerald mining in India and Brazil’. The case study was based on their unit in Chemistry titled Extraction of Metals. The students were given the abstract on Gemstone industries in both countries and details of emerald mining. MYP Student Reflections on International Dot Day

1. Eishita Dhanwani (MYP 4) Our school decided to celebrate the international dot day by organising a competition. I personally think that is a wonderful way to celebrate an important event that even I was unaware about until the competition was announced. At first, when it was announced, most of us started panicking. We all scattered around the class in order to find the required supplies. Charts, sketch pens, crayons and a ton of other items were assembled on the tables. We all decided to make groups in order to share creative ideas and come up with something really creative and time saving. Our class was in chaos. Some were seriously doing their work. Our class did come up with splendid products. It was really creative and each of them were personalised which made them very special.
