Developing ATL Skills through Chemistry

Image
by Jalpa Shreyas Shah The aim of education is not just transfer of knowledge from the source to receiver but to help individuals develop skills and attitudes which will help them to connect with the real world and solve challenges in real life. In other words, I would say, education leads to empowerment, and individuals and organizations should focus on development of these 21st century skills. As knowledge becomes obsolete, empowerment skills are for a lifetime and hence we call them 21st century skills.     It is time we realize that individuals learn in different ways and it is imperative we equip them with those skills which will help them “to learn how to learn” in IB programmes. This is achieved through ‘Approaches to teaching learning (ATL) skills’. However, most traditional schools of thought in India focus only on mathematical, logical and linguistic skills, and not on skill development which will help students to learn. Knowledge is everyw...

MYP 4A Assembly on 12 October 2017

Image
A wonderful assembly presentation was done by MYP 4A students on 12 October 2017. The theme was ‘Diwali and Disaster Management’. The aim of the presentation was to spread awareness of celebrating Diwali without crackers, in an effort to reduce environment pollution and to make the world a safe and beautiful place to live. At the same time, the presentation suggested measures to celebrate Diwali in an innovative way so that the joy of the festival can also be multiplied. The event helped us to prepare for and prevent disasters which are uncertain so that losses can be minimized. The beautiful dance and music performance by our MYP 4A learners held the attention of the audience. The assembly was concluded by our Head of School, Mr Dilip Vasu’s speech in which he spread the message of a pollution-free Diwali. More photos on our Facebook album .

‘Effective Leadership’ Training by our Head of School on 12 October 2017

Image
On 12 October 2017, our Head of School, Mr Dilip Vasu, conducted a highly energizing workshop with our MYP and DP staff, as well as a few PYP stakeholders and leaders on a very special theme: ‘Effective Leadership’. The entire session was perfectly organised, highly inspiring and dynamic. It was completely activity-based and interactive. It gave a new vision to the existing CI leadership whereas at the same time it gave a strong motivation with a subtle touch of care and assurance to the upcoming leaders. It was not only focused on effective leadership and team building but, in its flow, it covered all the essential areas of pedagogy including especially effective classroom-management, planning and preparation and teaching. At the very beginning, the teachers were asked to form groups as per their months of birth and they were distributed a questionnaire seeking their views on team building. This was followed by the questionnaires ‘Why teams sometimes fail’ and ‘When t...

SAIBSA – An Introspection! – Rajee Venugopal Attending SAIBSA Job Alike session was a good learning experience. The plenary session was very interesting wherein we received a lot of inputs to improve our understanding of conceptual learning, using Global contexts and making classroom learning interesting, and at the same time informative by applying the inquiry cycle. Our subject specific meet started on a very dull note with a Skype session on Simulations. I found that most of the science teachers already use simulations in their classroom teaching. Then a session on answering questions related to grey areas in unit planners was conducted, which I think could have been more specific for the benefit of new teachers. Anyway, most of the queries were attended to in a short time. A lot was discussed on IDU planning and I was glad to find that our understanding about planning and executing an IDU is quite sound. It was overwhelming to know that we are moving in the ...
