Industrial Chemistry Work Station

Image
Role of chemistry is to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge and help learners establish a link with the outer world. Where knowledge is not limited to four walls of the classroom but the student is able to establish the connection with the real world. Related to their curriculum Acid-Base and Salt in chemistry students of grade IX got unique opportunity to make liquid detergent in chemistry laboratory using Acid Slurry , Caustic Alkali, and urea. It was explained to students as for how all the soaps and detergents in the world are made of same chemical composition but the price differs due to Branding and packaging. What we made in the lab was around 3 liters of liquid detergent from the raw material of around 150 Rs, whereas the liquid wash with same foaming capacity is much costlier due to Brand and packaging power. Learners were sensitized to by-product as per their need and not because it is branded or some celebrity is endorsing. Students would be selling ...

Differential Teaching & Learning

Image
Choithram International believes in inclusive teaching learning pedagogy wherein teacher teaches not just by method he/she is proficient in but by ways and means that learners learn the best. It recognizes individual differences in classroom and provide myriad of learning strategies. Similar opportunity was provided to learners of grade IX in their chemistry classroom. Children learned about various concepts in chemistry through innovativ e hands on board games which are based on Howard Gardeners Multiple intelligence model.  For e.g topic of fractional distillation was taught not just by lecture method but children were asked to create a jig saw puzzle on the same. Similarly children learnt about chemical formulas by playing snakes and ladders. Properties of metals and non metals were not just thrown to them but students prepared property wind chime out of the property cards. Reflection by Anushka on Guest Lecture - Organ Donation

Image
Hi! My name is Anushka and today I will be reflecting on the ongoing service activity that is integrated with it Science - organ donation. We have this service going on for quite a long time. It started somewhere around October when we were learning about organ donation in Science class. We had two lessons in which we had a very deep discussion on organ donation in class, while we watched 1-2 videos on it. About a week later, we had a very fruitful debate in our class on whether or whether not organ donation should be compulsory. Many notable points were raised, and it was very interesting. In my opinion, organ donation should be highly encouraged, but not compulsory. There is a line, and making it compulsory would be crossing that line. In my opinion, every person has their body, and I believe every person should have full rights to their own body, before and after death. This is why I strongly disagreed the above statement.  Moving on from the debate, the next service ac...

MYP Service As Action - Visit to Amarlal Seva Trust

Image
At the beginning of the year, my classmates came up with a great idea to help and entertain the people in the old age home as their families don't have time for them. This was for our Service as Action which was English Language and Literature curriculum-initiated with the unit ‘Family melodrama - King Lear’.  We decided to spend some quality time with them and make them feel happy. On the first visit, we interacted with them, got to know the problems they were facing there and also enjoyed with them by giving a musical and dance performance. On our next visit, we not only wanted to spend time with them, but also raise some money so that they can overcome the problems they face over there. So, to raise money we showed the PYP kids of our school a movie of their choice. During this visit, we performed before them a dance and also a musical. We asked them to perform too, which they did. They were great performances that everyone enjoyed. Finally, we gave them t...
